Raccoon hunter, 16, shot accidentally

A 16-year-old Dumont boy is recovering from injuries sustained late Saturday night in a raccoon hunting accident near Waverly, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources said.

Mathew Allen was hunting raccoons with a group at Cedar Bend Park north of Waverly when the accident happened around 11:20 p.m. Witnesses told investigators Allen had crossed a fence and turned to help hunting dogs cross when he stumbled and fell, causing the .22-caliber pistol he had holstered to his side to discharge.

Allen was taken to Waverly Health Center for treatment if injuries to his upper right thigh. The injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
