The Most Memorable Turkey Hunt Ever!!!!

DawnWell this past weekend should have been a successful weekend for area Turkey hunters; I know that it was for my cousin and I.

Saturday started for me at 3:30am, waking up to the dark of night which was still upon us. Driving to my hunting ground, I was hoping that this would be a good hunting day. Little did I know that it was going to be a great hunting day and a very exciting one at that.

My cousin Brian and I got to our spot and popped up the Double Bull blind, set the turkey decoys, and listened to nature wake up. We were all set up and ready for the morning hunt at 5:15am. We started out a little earlier than normal because we couldn’t drive out in the timber because of all the rain the night before. It was wet, and I mean wet (as you can tell from the tailfeathers of our birds).

So we sat there, Brian falling asleep, and me looking around listening to nothing. Listening to nothing butMatt's Turkey the creek behind us and loving every minute of it. As dawn came upon, I was looking around the tree tops trying to find Turkeys roosted in trees. It was at this point where I knew we were going to have an exciting hunt.

As I was looking up, I saw a Turkey roosted, then another, then another, then a couple more, and another. I counted 9 total that were no more than 50 yards from us, up in the treetops. We must have done a good job at walking in quietly because we had to of walked 20 yards away from these birds and they didn’t hear or see us.

As the sun started coming up, the turkey’s started waking up. The hens started yelping and clucking and so did we. The turkeys started flying down one by one from the treetops to the top of a hill right below them. We kept calling, time passed, and nothing. They didn’t come in to our calls, and there was very little gobbling. I thought that we had lost them.

Matt and Brian's TurkeysTime passed and it was about 7:15am now and I looked to my right and saw all of the turkeys that I had spotted in their roost flying over to a near by pasture on my land. Brian and I talked about what we want to do and we decided to start stalking. Leaving our blind, chairs, and decoys behind we started going towards the turkeys. Once we got up on a hill that was about 400 yards away from them, all we saw was turkeys. It was amazing!!! There were at least 5 toms struting and numerous hens with them. We continued to circle the turkeys and finally we were starting to get close. We made sure that we stayed behind hills and brush so we were not seen. We slowly peaked our heads over a hill and saw that the turkeys had moved to the bottom of the hill rather then the top where they were when we first saw them. Looking over the other side of the hill, Brian said that there were 2 toms struting right on the other side of the hill, about 15 yards from us. I said that I would take the one on the left and he take the one on the right. 1 – 2 – 3 BANG!!!!!!!! Both turkey’s drop instantly, going from full strut to straight up dead. It was AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!

That hunt was my most memorable turkey hunt to date. A Memorable Hunt

  1. Great job, guys. Awesome when you can share something like that with a family and friends. My first deer was a double I shot with my grandpa. I’ll never forget that day or that buck – it wasn’t much of a buck, but what a great memory.

  2. Wow, nice work. You’re clearly a lot better at this than I am! Congrats on the nice birds. Excellent blog you have here as well.

  3. Congrats! My first turkey this year wasn’t as exciting, but the Turkey Guillotine always makes the shot memorable.
I love your blog as well, one of the few that “speaks my language.” = ]

  4. Can I ask though – how did you get this picked up and into google news?

Very impressive that this blog is syndicated through Google and is it something that is just up to Google or you actively created?

Obviously this is a popular blog with great data so well done on your seo success..

Paragliding greats you should write about next, my ex was an Paragliding champ!
